OPENING HOURS

Monday to Friday: 8.00am To 8.45pm

Saturday: 9.00am To 6.00pm

Sundays and Public Holidays: Closed

  • Membership of the library is open to registered students and staff.
  • Membership of patrons from recognized institutions collaborating with Egerton University is considered on production of a recommendation letter from their institutions.
  • Other external members shall be considered for membership on production of recommendation letters from a local chief or their employer. In addition, they shall pay a non-refundable registration fee of Kshs. 200/=, Kshs.1,000/= annual subscription fee and Kshs. 5000/= as caution money. The fees are subject to revision without notice.
  • Non-members shall be allowed to use library materials on identification and payment of Kshs. 50/= per day. 
  • The University Librarian reserves the right to demand identification from registered members and may withhold admission into the library. University identification cards must be shown at the library entrance.
  • External users shall produce national identification cards and the letter of authorization to use the Library.
  • A member who loses a University ID card cannot be served or gain entry to the Library unless on presentation of a valid document to support the loss. 

CLEARANCE OF USERS
Library clearance to the registered members will be based upon payment of/for: -

  1. Overdue fines in full 
  2. Lost library materials

However, payment does not absolve the patron any liability in the event of the original borrower’s barcode being wrongly used.

The number of books a user is allowed to borrow:

  1. Undergraduate students - 4 books for two weeks and 1 reserve/short loan book for one hour. 
  2. Postgraduate students - 5 books for one month and 1 reserve/short loan book for one hour. 
  3. Academic staff - 5 books for three months. 
  4. Non-teaching staff - 2 books for one month. 

 

Normal Loans

  • All registered members are allowed to borrow books and expected to identify themselves at the time of borrowing.  A member may borrow any book in the open shelves.
  • Books in: Reference., Reserve, Africanna, Special Collections, and theses/dissertations are for use within the library. 
  • The Librarian may recall, withhold or restrict the circulation of any information material in the library. 

Reserved/Short Loan Resources

  • May be borrowed for use in the library for a maximum of 1 hour and may be renewed.
  • The resources are available for overnight loan after 9.00 p.m. for return on the following day by 9.00 a.m. 
  • Books for weekend loan may be signed out after 4.00 p.m.  on Saturdays and returned by 9.00 a.m. on Monday.

Returning Resources on Loan

  • All materials on loan must be returned before or on the time/date due. 
  • Borrower’s accounts for materials returned by a third party are subject to verification by the owner on production of University ID card. 
  • Members who repeatedly fail to return books on date due will lose their membership privileges. 
  • A book will be assumed lost after the third reminder and shall therefore be paid for.
  • Borrowers are held responsible for any damage or loss of information materials‚ and should inspect them before borrowing.

Overdue library materials will be charged a fine of;

  1. Long loan Kshs.1/= per day.
  2. Short loan Kshs.1/= for the first hour and Kshs.6/- for every subsequent hour.
  • Recalled materials accumulate Kshs 2/= per day one week from the recall date.
  • Fines must be paid promptly.  Readers borrowing privileges  shall be withheld until payment is made.  The Library reserves the right of suspending ones membership until the accumulated fines are cleared.
  • For lost information materials, borrowers will be charged;
  1. Three times the cost of a book in print.
  2. Five times the cost of a book out of print
  • For damaged information materials, borrowers will be charged twice the cost of replacement or repair. Damaged materials will remain in the library until payment due is received.
  • Materials declared lost and charged for will only be accepted back at the convenience of the library. Refund will be at the discretion of the Librarian.
  • A user attempting to remove a book from the library in an unauthorized manner shall be taken to security and fined Kshs.500./- , have his/her membership suspended  and taken to the University  Disciplinary Committee.
  • Photocopying is available at K shs2/= per copy.


All photocopying is subject to:

  1. Copy Right Act (Cap130 laws of Kenya)
  2. The Librarian's authority to photocopy
  3. The written permission from the authors of theses and dissertations.

 

Lost Books

  • Materials declared lost and charged for will only be accepted back at the convenience of the library.
  • Refund will be at the discretion of the Librarian. 

Lost and damaged books
For lost information materials, borrowers will be charged;

  1. Three times the cost of a book in print.
  2. Five times the cost of a book out of print
  3. Or replace with same/similar title edition

For damaged information materials:

  • Borrowers will be charged twice the cost of replacement or repair. Damaged materials will remain in the Library until payment due is received. 

The following rules and regulations have the force of Egerton University statutes for efficient delivery of services and disciplinary purposes. All patrons are strongly advised to learn, know and adhere to them.

  • Silence shall be strictly observed in the library.
  • Mobile phones must be switched off while in the library otherwise these are subject to confiscation on default.
  • Wearing of caps, overcoats/rolls, heavy jackets and similar wear is not allowed. 
  • Bags should be left on the shelf at the entrance. The library accepts no liability for loss of personal property left at the entrance. 
  • All readers must show on exit all items they are taking out of the library. The security staff reserves the right to inspect books and check bags leaving the library. 
  • Marking or defacing of books and periodicals is forbidden. Razors and penknives are not allowed in the library.
  • Readers are advised not to return books on the shelves but leave them on the reading carrels or tables. 
  • Materials not properly borrowed from other libraries will be confiscated and returned to their institutions of origin with particulars of the user found with them for necessary action by the offended institutions. 
  • Smoking, spitting, eating, hawking, sleeping, drinking and littering are strictly prohibited in the library. Defaulters under conduct rules will be charged a minimum fine of Kshs. 200/= in addition to suspension or termination of membership.
