Introduction


The program aims to prepare graduates of middle level institutions to effectively and efficiently tackle both industrial and commercial challenges, and for post graduate work, research consultancy and extension services.

Justification
(a) The purpose for the introduction of this program is to offer a qualification higher than currently attainable through middle level institutions of higher learning.

(b) The program also aims to produce professional engineers who are capable of reaching highest levels of management in industry, and able to carry out engineering analysis and make quality management decisions.

(c) The program has been introduced in response to industrial development needs in the field of design, manufacturing, maintenance and repair, testing and commissioning, costing and estimation, research and development, contract tendering and projects management.

Objectives


The program offers professional specialization in the following options, all geared towards solving industrial development needs:-

(i) Design and Manufacturing Engineering,

(ii) Automotive and Prime-Movers Engineering,

(iii) Plant and Building Services Engineering,

(iv) Medical Engineering

(d) The program provides common core of skills and knowledge which are required by all occupational categories in the form of specialization options to enable the students to prepare for rapid technological changes currently seen globally.

Bachelor of Industrial Technology Program aims to uplift and also to impart knowledge and modern technical and managerial skills to the students, to enable them respond effectively to industrial development.

Specific Objectives
(a) Extend further the students scientific and engineering knowledge and technical skills established in his/her previous study, to be able to analyze, synthesize and optimize real life problem solutions and to provide a firm base for further study and research.

(b) Develop the students? ability to sound commercial judgement with regard to product or services design, manufacture or operations and projects management.

(c) Develop appreciation of the influence of other specialism and the effect of the same on other disciplines, including work ethics.

(d) Provide the student with sound basis for communication, computer applications in engineering and the understanding of industrial, legal and environmental constraints.

Administration



The program shall be open to employer-sponsored or self- sponsored students, with proven qualifications and relevant industrial experience, in the following areas of specialization:-

¨ Mechanical Engineering (Production/Plant Options)

¨ Motor Vehicle and Construction Plant Engineering

¨ Medical Engineering.

¨ Chemical Engineering.

Admission shall be offered to holders of Technical based Diploma, or equivalent qualifications recognized by Egerton University Senate and with relevant industrial experience.

Duration of Study
The estimated full time duration for this program following on from Engineering Diploma will take three academic years with one supervised industrial attachment. The program is taken, either on full-time, or Part-time (block release) basis.

The coding used for all courses pertaining to this degree program is ITEC standing for Industrial Technology, followed by 3 digits as set out below:

(a) First digit indicates the year the course is offered.

(b) Second digit indicates the courses and level in groups, i.e.

Examination


All examinations for this program shall be conducted in accordance with the University statutes and regulations. However, the following practical subject shall be examined as below:
ITEC 241 ? Industrial Attachment
This shall be examined by assessing the student at his/her industrial attachment place and oral and final report submission to the Department as follows.
(i) Industrial Supervisor. 25%

(ii) University Supervisor. 25%

(iii) Oral Presentation. 20%

(iv) Final Report Submission. 30%

ITEC 242- Industrial Research projects
Shall be examined as follows:

(i) Oral Project Proposal Defense 20%

(ii) Industrial Research Proposal Submission 20%

(v) Manuscript Preparation 10%
